Among diseases transmitted by ticks, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) caused by Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete are most important. Also Ehrlichiae are associated for a part of their life cycle with ticks, which serve as vectors for vertebrate hosts. They are small gram-negative obligately intracellular bacteria that multiply within vacuoles of their host cells.

Babesiosis is caused by hemoprotozoan parasites of the genus Babesia. While more than 100 species have been reported, only a few have been identified as causing human infections. Babesia microti and Babesia divergens have been identified in most human cases, but variants (considered different species) have been recently identified. Little is known about the occurrence of Babesia species in malaria-endemic areas where Babesia can easily be misdiagnosed as Plasmodium. Babesiosis is a vector-borne illness usually transmitted by Ixodid ticks. Babesia microti uses the same tick vector, Ixodes scapularis, as Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis, and may occur in conjunction with these other diseases.
